It's a rare occasion for me to write about cleaning or ironing…unless it’s to show a mound of laundry on top of my dryer or in some other instance of wry humor.
Today, I come before you a changed woman, believing firmly in wrinkle free living, and the need to iron out the little things that matter. And my life changing moment occurred the other day, when my 26-year-old son, Alex, sent me a text message.
It came out of the blue…without prompting…usually it’s me sending a text to make sure he’s okay and has arrived safe at his destination, despite whatever weather elements have caused me to worry. And candidly, those elements can include the sun rising and setting every day of the year!
I get this honestly, having had a father, who checked on me all the time…back when there were answering machines, not cell phones. And I still remember the slight annoyance of him thinking I couldn’t take care of myself. I realize now as a parent, that it has almost nothing to do with confidence in your children. It has more to do with having graduated from a period of time in life when your sole purpose was the wellbeing of your children, from sun up to sun down.

This week, there was a bit of a role reversal and I think he was checking in on me. He shared something I had long forgotten…not realizing that something so small and silly would leave an imprint…a happy childhood memory. The little things do matter:
"Ironing some shirts for tomorrow.
It almost always reminds me
of when you used to iron
and re-iron my school shirts
when it was cold out. You
are the best mom in the
entire world."
